The Biome Broth Study
Real Dogs. Real Results. Real Science.
At Boil and Broth, we don’t just believe in the power of bone broth, we put it to the test. In collaboration with Biome4Pets and Aberystwyth University, we conducted a 4-week canine gut microbiome study on 33 dogs who had never consumed bone broth before. Each dog’s gut microbiome was analysed before and after daily bone broth supplementation to assess changes in bacterial diversity and key gut health markers.
The results were remarkable. 96.88% of dogs showed an increase in gut bacterial diversity, a vital indicator of digestive health, immune function, and overall wellbeing. Even more impressive, levels of beneficial Bifidobacterium, bacteria linked to stronger immunity and reduced inflammation, increased by an average of 1562.86% across all participants. At the same time, potentially harmful bacteria such as Helicobacter and Clostridium Sensu Stricto were significantly reduced, helping to support gut balance, reduce inflammation, and improve digestive comfort.
This study provides strong evidence that bone broth acts as a natural prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in your dog’s gut and helping to restore healthy microbial balance.
Key Study Highlights
✔ 96.88% of dogs experienced increased gut bacterial diversity after 4 weeks of bone broth
✔ Helicobacter levels reduced by 96.97%, supporting lower gut inflammation
✔ 87.1% of dogs saw a reduction in Clostridium Sensu Stricto
✔ Bifidobacterium increased by 1562.86% – in every single dog
✔ Firmer stools, less itching, shinier coats, and improved energy reported by owners
✔ Dogs on balanced, high-fibre, or raw diets saw the greatest improvements
These changes are important because a healthy gut microbiome supports:
- Stronger immunity
- Better digestion
- Reduced inflammation
- Healthier skin and coat
- Improved overall wellbeing
"Expert Insight"
Dr Carol Hughes, Microbiologist at Biome4Pets, explains:
“We analysed the microbiome and chose three important species of bacteria. Two are commonly associated with gastric discomfort and diarrhoea, and the third is associated with good health. We have seen remarkable results with bone broth, which appears to behave as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria.”
