Our Planet Promise
Sustainability, Innovation & a Focus for a Healthier Future
At Boil and Broth, sustainability isn’t an add-on, it’s at the heart of everything we do. We’re committed to reducing waste, reusing materials that would otherwise be discarded, and creating products that are kinder to the planet and better for you, your pets, and future generations.
Animal bones are a by-product of meat production that traditionally have limited value and are often sent for disposal despite their nutritional richness. At Boil and Broth we do things differently: we repurpose bones that would typically go to waste to create nourishing bone broth. That’s wholesome nutrition made with respect for the resources we use.
We also know that traditional bone broth can be energy-intensive to produce, ship and store, especially when sold as a liquid requiring refrigeration. That’s why we dehydrate our broths, removing the water makes them lighter to transport and removes the need for cold storage, dramatically reducing carbon emissions associated with shipping.
Our commitment extends beyond broth. We also repurpose nutrient-rich tallow, another by-product of butchery, in our range of tallow-based skincare products designed for both dogs and humans. This means fewer valuable natural fats are wasted and more of the animal is used in ways that benefit health and wellbeing.
This page outlines how we approach sustainability, the goals we’re working toward, and the steps we’re taking to minimise environmental impact while supporting a regenerative food system you can trust.
Reusing Bones & Reducing Landfill Waste
Every year in the UK, around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste is generated, with a significant proportion made up of parts people don’t eat, such as bones, peel, and shells. When this waste is mixed with general rubbish, it is usually sent to landfill, where it breaks down without oxygen and releases methane, a greenhouse gas far more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide.
Animal bones are a natural by-product of the meat industry and are often treated as low-value waste, despite being rich in minerals, collagen, and nutrients. Although these materials still have real value, they are frequently buried rather than reused.
At Boil and Broth, we do things differently. We repurpose British-sourced bones that would otherwise be discarded and transform them into nourishing bone broth products for both humans and pets. By giving these resources a second life, we help to:
- Reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions
- Make better use of the whole animal
- Support a more responsible, circular food system
For us, sustainability starts with respecting the resources we use. Turning what was once considered waste into something nutritious and beneficial is a simple but powerful way to reduce environmental impact while delivering real health value.
Why We Chose Dehydrated Broth
Traditional liquid bone broth is heavy, energy-intensive to store, and often requires freezing, refrigeration, and specialist packaging to stay fresh. While it’s nutritious, it comes with a much higher environmental cost.
When we switched from frozen liquid broth to dehydrated bone broth, we reduced our overall carbon footprint by 44%. This was achieved through major reductions in:
- Energy use
- Frozen storage requirements
- Transport emissions
- Perishable packaging
- Food waste
By removing the water from our broth, we create a lightweight, shelf-stable product that delivers the same nutrition with a far smaller environmental impact.
What This Means for You
Dehydrated broth offers real, practical benefits for both the planet and our customers:
- No freezer or fridge needed – store it easily in your cupboard
- Long shelf life – less waste and fewer spoiled products
- Zero unnecessary waste – make only what you need, when you need it
Lower transport emissions – lighter to ship, reducing carbon output- Less packaging – no bulky, insulated, or perishable materials
Instead of throwing away unused liquid broth, you simply rehydrate the exact amount you need. Nothing goes to waste, and nothing is lost in quality.
Our dehydrated process allows us to provide nourishing bone broth in a way that’s better for the environment, more convenient for customers, and more sustainable for the future.
Repurposing Tallow: Reducing Waste, Creating Value
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we make sure that as much of the animal as possible is used responsibly and respectfully. One way we do this is by repurposing tallow — the natural fat that remains after bone broth production.
Instead of allowing this valuable by-product to go to waste, we transform it into 100% natural cosmetic products for dogs (and humans). Tallow is rich in skin-loving nutrients and has been used for centuries to nourish, protect, and soothe the skin.
By reusing tallow, we:
- Reduce waste from the production process
- Make better use of natural resources
- Avoid unnecessary synthetic ingredients
- Create gentle, effective skincare products
- Support a circular, low-waste system
Our tallow-based balms are made with simple, natural ingredients and are designed to care for paws, noses, and skin in a way that’s both kind to the body and kind to the planet.
For us, sustainability isn’t just about reducing impact — it’s about turning by-products into something beneficial, practical, and purposeful.
Our Net Zero Goals
Sustainability is not a one-time action for us — it’s a long-term commitment to doing better, every year. We’re continually reviewing our processes, suppliers, energy use, packaging, and logistics to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible.
Our goals are clear:
- By 2030: We aim to produce Net Zero bone broths, meaning the carbon footprint of our broth products will be fully reduced and offset.
- By 2035: Our goal is to become a Net Zero bone broth company, ensuring our entire business operates with minimal environmental impact across production, packaging, transport, and operations.
To achieve this, we will continue to:
- Improve energy efficiency
- Reduce waste across all processes
- Source responsibly
- Invest in sustainable solutions
- Innovate in low-impact production methods
We believe that caring for the planet goes hand in hand with caring for health — for people, pets, and future generations. These goals reflect our commitment to building a business that not only delivers nourishing products, but also plays a positive role in protecting the world around us.
